Word Selector




Up Package The open hands, palms facing and fingers pointing out, are dropped an inch or two simultaneously. They then shift their relative position so that both palms face the body, with one hand in front of the other. In this new position they again drop an inch or two simultaneously.
Up Pain
(ache, hurt, injury)
The 'D' hands, index fingers pointing to each other, are rotated in elliptical fashion before the chest--simultaneously but in opposite directions.
Up Pale The fingertips of the '5' hand are place against the chest. The hand moves straight out from the chest, while the fingers and thumb all come together. Then both hands, fingers spread, rise up and over the cheeks.
Up Pants The open hands are drawn up along the thighs, starting at the knees.
Up Paper Strike the heel of the left upturned palm two glancing blows with the heel of the right down turned palm.
Up Parents Using the right '5' hand, the right thumbtip first touches the right side of the chin, then moves up to touch the right temple. (The 'P' hand may also be used)
Up Part
(a portion of)
The little finger edge of the open right hand moves straight down the middle of the upturned left palm.
Up Party
(fiesta)
There are two different signs for "party"!
1. Both open hands, held somewhat above the head, are pivoted back and forth repeatedly, as if swinging a pair of tambourines.
2. The downturned index and middle fingers of the right 'V' hand swing rhythmically back and forth over the upturned left palm.
Up Pass Both 'A' hands, palms facing each other, are held before the body, the right behind the left. The right hand moves forward, its knuckles brushing those of the left, and continues forward a bit beyond the left.
Up Past
(previous, previously)
The upraised right hand, in the '5' position with palm facing the body, is held just above the right shoulder and is thrown back over it.
Up Pay The right hand, grasping several imaginary bills, "peels off" one as it moves forward.
Up People The 'P' hands, side by side, are moved alternately toward the body in continuous counterclockwise circles.
Up Percent The right 'O' hand draws a percent symbol in the air.
Up Perfect The 'P' hands face each other. The right executes a clockwise circle above the stationary left, and then moves down so that the thumb and middle fingers of each hand come into precise contact.
Up Perhaps
(may, maybe, might, possibly)
The upturned open hands move alternately up and down.
Up Permanent The 'A' hands are held with palms out, thumbs extended and touching, the right behind the left. In this position the hands move forward in a straight, steady line.
Up Perpendicular The right index finger touches the middle finger of the left 'P' hand.
Up Person The 'P' hands, side by side, move straight down a short distance, as if outlining the sides of an unseen individual.
Up Personal The back of the right thumb is pressed against the lips.
Up Perspire
(perspiration)
The bent right index finger is drawn across the forehead from left to right and then shaken to the side, as if getting rid of the sweat.
Up Photograph
(picture)
The right 'C' hand is held in front of the face, with thumb edge near the face and palm facing left. The hand is then brought sharply around if front of the open left hand and is struck firmly against the left palm, which is held facing forward with finger pointing up.
Up Piece
(noun & verb)
The little finger edge of the open right hand moves straight down the middle of the upturned left palm.
Up Pity
(mercy, sympathy)
The middle fingertip of the open right hand touches the chest over the heart. The same open hand then moves in a small, clockwise circle before the right shoulder, with palm facing forward and fingers pointing up.
Up Place
(location, a position)
The 'P' hands are held side by side before the body, with middle fingertips touching. From this position, the hands separate and outline a circle (or a square), before coming together again closer to the body.
Up Plan
(noun & verb)
The hands, palms facing, fingers together and pointing away from the body, are positioned at the left side and held about a foot apart. With a slight up-down motion, as if describing waves, the hands travel in unison from left to right.
Up Plastic The right hand grasps the middle finger of the left 'P' hand and bends it back and forth.
Up Play Hold both 'Y' hands up in front of the chest and shake them back and forth, pivoted at the wrist.
Up Please
(enjoy, like)
Make a counterclockwise circle with the right flat hand over the heart.
Up Police The right 'C' hand, palm facing left, is placed against the heart.
Up Popcorn The index fingers alternately flick up.
Up Post Office The signer fingerspells "P-O" - .
Up Postpone The 'F' hands, palms facing and fingers pointing out from the body, are moved forward simultaneously in a series of short movements.
Up Precise The thumb and index finger of each hand, palms facing, the right above the left, form circles. They are brought together with a deliberate movement, so that the fingers and thumbs now touch. Sometimes the right hand, before coming together with the left, executes a slow clockwise circle above the left.
Up Pregnant One or both open hands are placed on the stomach and moved forward an inch or two, to indicate the swollen belly.
Up Prepare The hands, palms facing, fingers together and pointing away from the body, are positioned at the left side and held about a foot apart. With a slight up-down motion, as if describing waves, the hands travel in unison from left to right.
Up Present
(noun-a gift)
Both hands, slightly cupped, palms up, are held close to the chest. They move up and out in unison, describing a very slight arc.
Up Present
(verb-to offer)
Both 'A' hands, with index fingers somewhat draped over the tips of the thumbs, are held palms facing in front of the chest. They are pivoted forward and down in unison, from the wrists.
Up Present
(adjective-in the present)
The upturned right-angle hands drop down rather sharply. The 'Y' hands may also be used.
Up President The 'C' hands, held palms out at either temple, are drawn out and up from the head into the 'S' position.
Up Pretty
(beautiful, beauty)
The right hand, fingers closed over the thumb, is placed at or just below the lips. It then describes a counterclockwise circle around the face, opening into the '5' position, to indicate the whole face. At the completion of the circling movement the hand comes to rest in its initial position, at or just below the lips.
Up Prevent
(interfere, interrupt, prevention)
The left hand, fingers together and palm flat, is held before the body, facing somewhat down. The little finger side of the right hand, held with palm flat, makes one or several up-down chopping motions against the left hand, between its thumb and index finger.
Up Previous (ly) The upraised right hand, in the '5' position with palm facing the body, is held just above the right shoulder and is thrown back over it.
Up Price The knuckle of the right 'X' finger is nicked against the palm of the left hand, held in the '5' position, palm facing right.
Up Privacy
(private)
The back of the thumb of the right 'A' hand is placed firmly against the closed lips. The thumb, in this position, may move off the lips slightly and return again to the lips. As an optional addition, the thumb may swing down under the downturned cupped left hand, after being placed on the lips as above.
Up Problem Both 'B' hands, palms facing each other, are rotated alternately before the forehead.
Up Promise
(noun & verb)
The right index finger is placed at the lips. The right arm is then raised, palm out and elbow resting on the back of the left hand.
Up Proof
(prove)
The back of the open right hand is placed with a flourish on the open left palm. The index finger may first touch the lips.
Up Protect The 'S' hands, downturned, are held side by side in front of the body, the arms almost horizontal, and the left hand in front of the right. Both arms move a short distance forward and slightly downward.
Up Purpose The right index finger touches the middle of the forehead. The tips of the right 'V' hand, palm down, are then thrust into the upturned left palm. The right 'V' hand is then re-thrust into the upturned left palm, with right palm now facing the body.
